Renesas gets $1.5 billion bailout from government, customers - ( PH1L1PN33 )

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japanese chipmaker Renesas Electronics Corp received on Monday the 150 billion yen ($ 1.53 billion) bailout pledged last year by a government-led fund and major customers to aid the company’s restructuring efforts.

Eight of Renesas’ customers, including Toyota Motor Corp, Panasonic Corp and Nissan Motor Co Ltd paid just over 12 billion yen through a third-party share allocation and the government-led fund contributed the rest.

Hit by slumping orders and competition from competitors such as Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, Renesas was given a lifeline from the government-led fund last December to counter an earlier bid by U.S. private equity firm KKR & Co LP.

Bangladesh network launches 3G services - ( PH1L1PN33 )

DHAKA (Reuters) – Grameenphone, majority owned by Norway’s Telenor, on Sunday launched Bangladesh’s first mobile 3G (third generation) network, aiming for national coverage by next April.

The dominant provider, which has 44 percent of the market and paid $ 210 million for 10 megahertz of 3G spectrum in September, pledged to do its best to make the service available at “affordable” prices.

There are some 107 mobile phone users among Bangladesh’s population of over 160 million but it lacks internet services, with barely 36,000 subscribers by either mobile or fixed lines.

Grameenphone competes with Orascom Telecom’s Banglalink, Robi, a joint venture between Malaysia’s Axiata Group and Japan’s NTT DoCoMo, and Airtel, majority owned by India’s Bharti Airtel. Each of them paid $ 105 million for 5 megahertz of spectrum in an auction.

State-owned mobile operator Teletalk last year launched a 3G service on a test basis.

Fake online reviews get reality check - ( PH1L1PN33 )

Fake online products reviews have been around for years, fueled by unscrupulous marketers seeking to boost sales.

But a recent crackdown by authorities in New York could be the shock needed for the online sector to clean up its act.

The New York state attorney general’s office recently ordered 19 companies to halt these practices and pay fines totaling $ 350,000 to settle charges of manipulating online reviews for sites such as Yelp, Google+ and others.

The settlement stemmed from an undercover investigation in which officials created a fake yogurt shop in Brooklyn and sought help in marketing from so-called “search engine optimization” firms that work to boost a company’s online presence.

The investigators discovered online ads such as this one: “Hello… We need someone to post 1-2 reviews daily on sites like: Yelp, Google reviews, Citysearch and any other similar sites. We will supply the text/review… We are offering $ 1.00 dollar for every post.”

The companies hired writers from as far away as the Philippines, Bangladesh and Eastern Europe, according to the investigators.

“Consumers rely on reviews from their peers to make daily purchasing decisions on anything from food and clothing to recreation and sightseeing,” state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said.

“This investigation into large-scale, intentional deceit across the Internet tells us that we should approach online reviews with caution. “

Growth in fake reviews

While the extent of fake reviews is not clear, a 2012 report by the research firm Gartner concluded that between two and six percent of online reviews are “fake or deceptive,” and predicted this will grow to around 10 percent by 2014.

The prevalence of fake reviews is due to the high stakes involved.

The Gartner report said some 31 percent of consumers use online review because they find the opinions of a person like themselves to be more credible than advertising.

Gartner said studies from a number of university researchers suggest that positive reviews can provide a shot in the arm for many kinds of businesses, from hotels to restaurants to doctors or lawyers.

“In the hospitality industry, you are more likely to see bookings go up when you have better ratings,” said Jenny Sussin, a Gartner analyst and co-author of the report.

“For restaurants, a half-star increase in the review average can cause 7:00 pm bookings to go up 30 to 49 percent.”

Sussin said fake reviews can be used by small family operations to Fortune 500 companies. In addition to positive reviews, some fakes are negatives, often aimed at driving business to a competitor.

She said the review business has turned into a cottage industry, with writers in places such as India or the Philippines paid as little as $ 1 to $ 5 per review. In other cases, some employees or customers are offered incentives such as gift certificates for reviews, which is also considered deceptive or illegal.

Duncan Simester of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Eric Anderson of Northwestern University found that five percent of reviews for a major apparel maker came from people with no record of purchasing that product.

These questionable reviews were “significantly more negative” than the average, the researchers found, but the motivations were not clear.

“These deceptive reviews are written by loyal customers,” they wrote in a research paper submitted to an academic journal.

“One explanation for the data is that loyal customers may be acting as self-appointed brand managers… An alternative explanation is that the deceptive reviews are contributed by reviewers who seek to enhance their perceived social status.”

Yelp said recently its automatic filtering rejects about 25 percent of submitted reviews: “Yelp has been on guard against these very same reviews from our earliest days,” a blog post said.

The US Federal Trade Commission has also issued fines in such cases, based on its guidance that any payment for reviews or testimonials must be disclosed.

But Sussin said the New York case “is the biggest enforcement action we’ve seen” for this type of activity in the United States, and added that “this might deter people.”

Ending anonymity can ‘kill some of the truth’

Google recently stopped allowing anonymous reviews, in part due to concerns about fakery.

But Dartmouth University marketing professor Yaniv Dover said there is a downside to ending anonymity, arguing that people may take fewer risks when their identities are known.

“When you kill anonymity and force these social dynamics, you kill some of the truth,” Dover said.

“People tend to be more positive (if they are not anonymous). They don’t want to be perceived by their friends as negative.”

While fake reviews are not always easy to spot, there are warning signs.

Sussin says that for hotels and restaurants, a lack of detail about the location could be a sign for caution.

A reviewer who comments on multiple, unrelated products or services can also be suspicious. Excessive use of superlatives can also be a sign of faking, Gartner said.

Websites often raise flags when they get large numbers of reviews at one time, or if one IP address is tied to multiple reviews in a short time period.

Despite the apparently large numbers of fake reviews, most researchers say the system still works fairly well.

“The faking may be significant, but there are also market correction mechanisms,” Dover said.

“Review systems are basically are a good thing. Any user-generated content can better match producers and consumers.”

Judge tosses lawsuit opposed to Sirius takeover by Liberty Media - ( PH1L1PN33 )

(Reuters) – The board of Sirius XM Radio Inc did not breach its duty to shareholders by allowing a takeover by Liberty Media Corp without demanding it pay a premium for the stock, a Delaware judge ruled on Friday.

John Malone’s Liberty Media acquired control of the satellite radio broadcaster in January. The media holding company had loaned Sirius $ 530 million in rescue financing in 2009, and as part of that deal Sirius’ board agreed not to adopt a poison pill or any defense measures against a Liberty takeover after a three-year standstill.

The lawsuit by Sirius stockholder City of Miami Police Relief and Pension Fund accused the Sirius board of tying its own hands and abdicating its duty to shareholders.

Leo Strine, the chief judge or chancellor on the Delaware Court of Chancery, said in his 24-page opinion that Liberty Media is entitled to the deal it struck in 2009. He also said the deal was fully disclosed and shareholders waited too long to sue.

“The plaintiffs are not entitled to watch Sirius take over half a billion dollars in capital from Liberty Media, sit on the sidelines benefitting from the investment Liberty Media made in Sirius until after the statute of limitations expires, and then belatedly seek to deprive Liberty Media of the benefits of the contract,” Strine wrote.

The case is In Re Sirius XM Shareholder Litigation, Delaware Court of Chancery, No. 7800.

Telecom Italia chief Bernabe considering resigning: source - ( PH1L1PN33 )

By Paola Arosio

MILAN (Reuters) – Telecom Italia Executive Chairman Franco Bernabe is considering resigning at a board meeting scheduled for Thursday, a source close to the situation said, as his plans to relaunch the heavily indebted company may not get enough backing.

“We are heading towards a resignation,” the source told Reuters on Friday.

A second person familiar with the situation said Chief Operating Officer Marco Patuano could take up Bernabe’s powers to ensure management continuity and that its core shareholders would name a new chairman with a broadly representation role.

“Core shareholders are not worried because in such a case Patuano is the CEO,” the person said.

Telecom Italia could not be reached for comment.

Bernabe, who has been at the helm of the group since 2008, was considering proposing to the board meeting on Thursday a capital increase of up to 5 billion euros ($ 6.8 billion) to cut debt and fund badly needed investments, two sources close to the matter said earlier on Friday.

But they added Bernabe was checking if he had enough support for the plan, which could divide the board, as its core investors are reluctant to inject fresh cash into the company.

In a parliamentary hearing this week, the 65-year-old manager said Telecom Italia needed to raise fresh capital to avoid a credit rating downgrade to “junk” status and that the best way would be through a capital increase.

Bernabe spoke out against possible plans by top shareholder Telefonica to sell some of the company’s most valued assets, such as Brazilian unit TIM Participacoes, once it gains control of its Italian rival.

Director Luigi Zingales and other four independent directors have also spoken out against the sale of the Brazilian subsidiary.

Telefonica and three Italian investors struck a deal this week that could give the Spanish group full ownership of Telco, a holding that controls Telecom Italia via a 22.4 percent stake, sparking criticism among Italian politicians concerned that a strategic company could fall into foreign hands.

Other shareholders of Telco are insurer Generali and banks Mediobanca and Intesa Sanpaolo.

Uihlein shoots 60 at Dunhill Links - ( PH1L1PN33 )

Peter Uihlein came within one shot of breaking 60 as he produced a superb round in the European Tour Dunhill Links event on Friday.

The pro-am tournament which is played across three course including the British Open Championship venues of St Andrews and Carnoustie, saw the United States’ Uihlein post a 60 at nearby Kingsbairns.

That left him two shots off the lead held by England’s Tom Lewis.

But while Uihlein came agonisingly close to shooting 59, missing a long putt on the par-five ninth, his final hole, he could take some consolation from the performance last year of South Africa’s Branden Grace, who also shot 60 on the same course before going on to win the event

“I knew I needed to make an eagle and I thought I hit a good putt,” said Uihlein, who won his maiden title in Madeira in May.

The 24-year-old, who shot the 17th round of 60 on the European Tour, added: “I thought it would come back to the right but it kept going left.”

Reflecting on his round overall, he said: “Today started off with me hitting it close and not making anything and then I started holing it from everywhere. It was just one of those days that went for me.

“When I made that birdie on the 17th to go 11 under that was the first time 59 crossed my mind. I was in the zone out there and it was cool. I am definitely not as calm underneath (as it looked) but I just tried to stay with my routines and keep the same swing thought.

“I put a lot of work in during the off-season and even on my off weeks I’m still practising and grinding so it’s nice to see the results so quickly.”

South Africa’s Ernie Els, Uihlein’s playing partner, shot 65 and afterwards the South African major-winner joked: “I feel like I shot 90.”

Woods named PGA Tour player of year - ( PH1L1PN33 )

Tiger Woods was on Friday named as PGA Tour player of the year, while American Jordan Spieth was named rookie of the year.

It is the 11th time that the 37-year-old Woods has won the award, with this latest acknowledgement coming at the end of a season in which he has won five times in 16 Tour starts.

Woods, who has still not won a major since the 2008 US Open, won at the WGC-Cadillac Championship and the WGC Bridgestone Invitational as well as at the Players Championship.

“It’s been an incredible year to have won five times,” Woods said. “Fantastic year all around. It’s an incredible feeling to be voted by your peers and have that respect. It’s very humbling.”

Woods has 79 career Tour victories and is now just three shy of Sam Snead’s all-time record of 82.

He pipped Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott and Henrik Stenson to the award.

Meanwhile, the 20-year-old Spieth became the youngest player to win on the Tour in more than 80 years when he triumphed at the John Deere Classic when still 19.

He had nine top-10 finishes in all and has shot up the world rankings to 21st.

“It’s a tremendous honor,” Spieth said.

Facebook to show users less unwanted ads in newsfeed - ( PH1L1PN33 )

By Alexei Oreskovic

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Facebook newsfeeds will contain fewer ads for products or services that users are not interested in, Facebook Inc said on Friday, announcing changes in advertising policy.

It was the Web company’s latest effort to refine the newsfeed ads that have become more important to its business.

“When deciding which ad to show to which groups of people, we are placing more emphasis on feedback we receive from people about ads, including how often people report or hide an ad,” Facebook said.

“If someone always hides ads for electronics, we will reduce the number of those types of ads that we show to them,” the company said.

Facebook has been trying to make ads more prominent without triggering a backlash among its 1.15 billion users.

The world’s No.1 online social network, which generates roughly 85 percent of its revenue from advertising, now injects one paid ad into every 20 “stories” users see in their newsfeeds, the company said in July.

While big brands such as Toyota and AT&T advertise on Facebook, the company also makes money from marketers of weight-loss and teeth-whitening products. Analysts say some users may not welcome these less-glamorous pitches in their newsfeed.

Forrester Research analyst Nate Elliott said Facebook needs to take steps to keep the latter category of ads in the less intrusive, right-hand side of the Web page, while reserving the space within users’ newsfeed for higher-quality ads.

“If Facebook allows unappealing advertising to invade that space then they’re in trouble. That harms the user experience, and reduces the value of that inventory for high-quality marketers,” Elliott said.

Facebook said some marketers “may see some variation in the distribution of their ads” in coming weeks. The company did not elaborate.

Shares of Facebook finished Friday’s regular trading session up 1.7 percent at $ 51.24, the highest closing level since the company went public in May 2012.

Samsung addresses EU concerns in antitrust probe - ( PH1L1PN33 )

By Andrew Longstreth and Karen Freifeld

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Samsung Electronics Co on Friday offered remedies that may settle a European Union probe over whether it breached antitrust rules through its use of patent lawsuits against rival Apple Inc.

“Samsung has agreed to propose commitments that will be market tested,” EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said in a speech in New York on Friday. “We hope to conclude this case.”

The details of the offer were not disclosed, and Samsung could not immediately be reached for comment.

South Korean-based Samsung attempted to settle with the European Commission earlier but the antitrust regulator had said it wanted more concessions.

Samsung and Apple, the world’s top two smartphone makers by volume and sales, are locked in patent disputes in at least 10 countries as they vie for control of the lucrative and fast-growing mobile market.

Samsung dropped injunction requests against Apple in Europe after the Commission filed charges against it last year.

The Commission also charged Google’s Motorola Mobility with a similar anti-competitive offense in May.

The Samsung case may help bring clarity to technology patents known as standard-essential patents, or SEPs, across the industry.

US-Iran logjam ends, not with a bang but with Twitter - ( PH1L1PN33 )

The surprise first phone contact Friday between presidents Barack Obama and Hassan Rouhani was not only a dramatic moment in US-Iranian ties, but also in the field of digital diplomacy.

Moments before the US leader announced from the White House podium that he had a chat with his opposite number, the Iranian president had sent a tweet that could live in history.

“In a phone conversation b/w #Iranian & #US Presidents just now: @HassanRouhani: ‘Have a Nice Day!’ @BarackObama: ‘Thank you. Khodahafez,’” it read.

Rouhani’s account appeared on Twitter after his election this year and his English-language messages have become a symbol of Tehran’s diplomatic outreach.

There has been some controversy about the account at home. It has not been officially confirmed as his and social networking sites are banned to ordinary citizens.

But throughout his visit this week to the UN General Assembly in New York, Rouhani’s office has used the stream to keep followers up to date with his speeches and media appearances.

Any lingering doubts that the account is run by his office evaporated when it confirmed the phone call before the White House did.

And on Friday, even as Obama spoke in the more traditional venue of the White House briefing room, Rouhani outlined his side of the exchange online.

“President #Rouhani and President @BarackObama expressed their mutual political #will to rapidly solve the #nuclear issue,” he said.

“Obama, @HassanRouhani appoint Foreign Ministers to follow up cooperation ASAP.

“@BarackObama to @HassanRouhani: I express my respect for you and ppl of #Iran. I’m convinced that relations between Iran and US..1/3

“@HassanRouhani to @BarackObama: We’re hopeful about what we will see from P5+1 and your govt in particular in coming weeks and months..2/3

“@HassanRouhani to @BarackObama: I express my gratitude for your #hospitality and your phone call. Have a good day Mr President. 3/3

“@BarackObama to @HassanRouhani: Thank you, Khodahafez.”

The tweets raced around the world and, stunning many observers — not all of them disinterested figures — who sensed that history was being made.

“I feel like I’m witnessing a tectonic shift in the geo-political landscape reading @HassanRouhani tweets. Fascinating,” tweeted Twitter CEO Dick Costolo.

Costolo doubtless has his reasons to celebrate his own platform’s role in the incident — but there was a sign that he might have a point: Rouhani re-tweeted him.

Microsoft reports 37,000 legal requests in six months - ( PH1L1PN33 )

Microsoft said Friday it received more than 37,000 government requests for information in the first half of 2013 — excluding any national security requests.

In only its second report on the matter, the US tech giant’s figures appeared to be on pace with 2012, when it got 75,378 requests.

“The report details the number of requests for data we received from law enforcement agencies around the world, and how Microsoft responds to those requests. It covers requests for data relating to all of Microsoft’s online and cloud services, including Skype,” the company said on its website.

“Unfortunately, we are not currently permitted to report detailed information about the type and volume of any national security orders… that we may receive so any national security orders we may receive are not included in this report.”

The report shows Microsoft received 37,196 requests from law enforcement agencies, potentially impacting 66,539 accounts in the first six months of 2013.

The company said it provided “non-content data” — usually names or basic subscriber information — in 77 percent of requests, and nothing in some 21 percent.

In 2.19 percent of the cases, the company turned over “customer content,” with more than 90 percent of these in the United States.

The report comes with US tech companies under pressure following revelations of a secret government program which scoops up vast amounts of data from Internet firms.

Tech firms including Microsoft. Google and Facebook have been seeking to release more information on government data requests, in the belief that this would reassure customers.

In June, Microsoft said it received between 6,000 and 7,000 criminal and national security warrants, subpoenas and orders affecting between 31,000 and 32,000 consumer accounts from US government entities.

It said it was permitted to publish data on national security orders “only if aggregated with law enforcement requests from all other US local, state and federal law enforcement agencies” and reported in a range, without specific numbers.

In Friday’s report, Microsoft said it received 7,014 requests from US law enforcement along with 978 for its Skype messaging division.

EA settles NCAA student-athlete cases, no game next year - ( PH1L1PN33 )

By Malathi Nayak

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Electronic Arts said it had reached a settlement with former college football athletes who have accused the company of using their images without permission and would not be making a new game for the popular “NCAA Football” series in 2014.

The athletes sued the video game publisher and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which has strict rules prohibiting them from sharing in the millions of dollars that schools receive from television and licensing deals. The case against the NCAA is still pending.

Electronic Arts’ move follows a decision by the NCAA in mid-July to not renew a contract to license its name and logo for EA’s college football game.

Its most recent installment in the series, “NCAA Football 14″, which was launched in July, is one of the company’s major sports games releases this year alongside “Madden” football and “FIFA” soccer video games.

Terms of the settlement were not made public. It now awaits the approval of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Some of the claims covered by athletes include those of former Arizona State University quarterback Samuel Keller, West Virginia football player Shawne Alston and Rutgers University star quarterback Ryan Hart, according to a statement by Seattle-based law firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro, which represented Keller.

Shares in EA were little changed in after-hours trading after closing at $ 26.15 on the Nasdaq on Thursday.

‘Masters of Sex’ serves beguiling side of feminism - ( PH1L1PN33 )

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dr. William Masters was not a feminist. Apart from his studies of the human physiology of sex, he was a traditional man in the mid-1950s, the kind who kept his wife at home.

But his groundbreaking research with Virginia Johnson made him something of a hero for women: A scientific advocate of female sexuality who proved that women were dynamic sexual creatures, perhaps even more so than men.

“Masters of Sex,” which premieres Sunday on Showtime, explores the relationship between Masters (Michael Sheen) and Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) and highlights their pioneering work, which helped fuel the sexual revolution and the women’s movement.

“I see him as a feminist hero,” Caplan said, “and that’s certainly not what he was setting out to do.”

“It was not deliberate on anyone’s part,” executive producer Michelle Ashford said of the feminist nature of Masters and Johnson’s work. “They ended up really championing women, but that was because they were basing it on the science that they saw… They realized women were robust sexual creatures, and in fact, in many ways they were more robust than men. So this was not an agenda of theirs in any way. It just emerged naturally out of the data that they were collecting.”

Masters was a gynecologist who began his research with Johnson in 1956 so he could better help his patients overcome their sexual problems. He and Johnson not only interviewed their subjects, they measured physiological responses to sex by observing them masturbating and having intercourse.

Capturing this aspect of Masters and Johnson’s work proved blush-worthy for the show’s cast and crew.

“It’s very hard not to notice when someone is masturbating with a glass dildo in front of you,” Sheen said. “But as time went on, it was quite extraordinary how quickly (we) got used to that.”

Sheen knew very little about Masters before signing on to the role, but found the doctor’s accidental feminism the most compelling aspect of his character. Masters was a regular church-goer, politically conservative, and a typical man of his time in his relations with women.

“He was fairly typical, and yet the work that he did played a part in creating a whole new era of female sexuality and gender politics,” Sheen said. “It was quite surprising that his work was so progressive and led to so many changes that we’re still living through, in terms of how women are perceived in our society and in our culture, and yet he was even more than typical — he was quite extreme in how he personally dealt with women.”

Caplan was also unfamiliar with the pair’s work, but leapt at the chance to play an unconventional woman like Johnson, a twice-divorced single mother who felt that sex and love didn’t necessarily have to go together. She started out as Masters’ secretary but quickly became his partner, first professionally, then romantically.

Sharing Masters and Johnson’s research with a modern TV audience “is part of the reason why doing the show is so exciting,” Caplan said, adding that she has long considered herself a feminist.

“It never crossed my mind that before they knew the science of the female orgasm that it could be something that held women down in society,” she said.

Masters and Johnson’s research disproved the prevailing Freudian theories of the time that blamed women for most sexual dysfunction (i.e. penis envy) and that “mature” female orgasms necessitated a male partner’s participation.

“(They) debunked that idea, and certainly in so doing supported feminist notions about, literally, women doing it for themselves,” said executive producer Sarah Timberman.

But it’s not like the show comes off as a stuffy science lecture. Set in a St. Louis research hospital (replicated on a Sony soundstage), “Masters of Sex” is a trip through the 1950s aesthetically and culturally. The ’50s fashions and furniture (and pharmaceutical bottles) take viewers back in time, and may have spawned some “Mad Men” comparisons in the press.

Producers maintain that “Masters” is very different: It’s a look at two real people whose research changed the way we think and talk about sex and remains relevant and revelatory today.

“They were trying to take something that’s so fundamental to the human experience and bring it into the light and out of the shadows. And the weirdness surrounding some of our discussions on the show just shows you that, here we are 50 years later, and we’re not that different than we were,” Timberman said. “In many ways we’ve advanced, but in many ways we’re still the same fumbling, confused people we were when Masters and Johnson were doing their work.”

Pakistan blocks ‘un-Islamic’ gay website - ( PH1L1PN33 )

Pakistan’s Internet watchdog has blocked the deeply conservative Muslim country’s first website aimed at gay people, saying it was “against Islam”.

The queerpk.com site, set up to help members of Pakistan’s homosexual and transgender community socialise and share experiences, was shut down on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority said they had halted access to the site after complaints from Internet users.

“We blocked the website under the law because its content was against Islam and norms of Pakistani society,” said spokesman Kamran Ali.

Homosexuality is illegal in Pakistan.

Queerpk.com’s moderator, who asked not to be named, said he would not challenge the ban in the courts for fear of a “negative reaction”.

“We wanted to provide a platform for people who are being abandoned by society because of their sexual likes,” he told AFP.

“I was not hopeful about the future of the website, I was convinced that sooner or later it would be banned.”

He said the site had a mix of members, with 44 percent identifying themselves as female and 56 as males.

A recent study by the Pew Research Center found that Pakistan was among the least tolerant of homosexuality among 39 countries surveyed.

In 2011 a gay pride celebration at the US embassy in Islamabad provoked angry reaction across the country.

But in tribal societies in Pakistan’s northwestern border areas there is an ancient custom of tolerated, albeit secret, sexual relationships between men and young boys.

BlackBerry shares sink on bid doubts, T-Mobile stops stocking its phones - ( PH1L1PN33 )

By Alastair Sharp and Sinead Carew

TORONTO/NEW YORK (Reuters) – Shares in BlackBerry Ltd fell more than 6 percent on Wednesday on doubts about a $ 4.7 billion bid to take the smartphone maker private, and after a big U.S. carrier said it would stop stocking BlackBerry smartphones in its stores.

In an announcement that highlighted the faded relevance of the company that pioneered on-the-go email, T-Mobile US Inc said it was no longer efficient to keep BlackBerry devices in its stores.

T-Mobile, the fourth largest U.S. wireless provider, will still ship BlackBerrys to customers who want them, most of them business users, said David Carey, executive vice president for corporate services.

The announcement from T-Mobile, which competes aggressively on price and is better known for consumers than for business customers, followed BlackBerry’s news that it is pulling back from the consumer market, where it has bled market share to Apple Inc’s iPhone and devices using Google Inc’s Android software.

BlackBerry, which put itself on the block in August, on Monday accepted a tentative $ 9 a share offer from a mostly Canadian consortium led by domestic insurer Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd, BlackBerry’s biggest shareholder with a 10 percent stake.

BlackBerry says its second-quarter results will feature slumping sales, a big operating loss and hefty job cuts. It reports results on Friday, but canceled plans for a conference call with investors because of the Fairfax bid.

BlackBerry’s Nasdaq-listed shares ended the day at $ 8.01, almost a dollar below the Fairfax group’s offer price.

They rose slightly in after-market trade after Fairfax Chief Executive Prem Watsa, a savvy investor often described as Canada’s answer to Warren Buffett, said he was confident the proposed deal would go ahead.

“It has landed on hard times but we think it will flourish over time in a private setting, as a private company where there is no speculation as to what happens every quarter or every six months and the management team can focus on building it over the long term,” Watsa told Reuters in an interview.

Watsa declined to name any of the other potential investors. Fairfax does not plan to contribute more than its existing stake in BlackBerry and has left itself the option of withdrawing the bid after reviewing BlackBerry’s books and operation.

“I don’t think people see it as a real bid,” said Eric Jackson of hedge fund Ironfire Capital, who closed a small position in BlackBerry after its June earnings report. “It wasn’t a firm offer and Prem can walk away from the deal at any time with no penalty.”

FINDING THE FUNDS

Watsa is personally seeking more than $ 1 billion from several leading Canadian and U.S. pension and private-equity funds to support the $ 4.7 billion bid, the Globe and Mail said on Wednesday, citing unnamed people familiar with the talks.

“Prem Watsa has to come up with other interested parties and to me it’s a pretty unappetizing deal,” said Barry Schwartz, portfolio manager at Baskin Financial Services in Toronto, which does not own BlackBerry shares. “It would be more appetizing if Prem was putting up more of his own cash to make the deal.”

But rating agency Fitch warned that a further concentration of Fairfax’s capital in BlackBerry could have a negative impact on its rating of the insurer. Moody’s says the bid is credit negative for Fairfax because moving its public stake into a private deal reduces liquidity.

The Globe and Mail said Watsa was pitching the acquisition as a leveraged buyout that would be financed with more than $ 3 billion in bank loans, $ 1 billion in equity from institutions and Fairfax’s BlackBerry stake.

If it cannot raise enough equity to help finance the bid, the Globe said Fairfax intends to arrange a short-term bridge loan that could be repaid with BlackBerry’s cash holdings of about $ 2.6 billion.

Watsa declined to comment on how the group plans to finance its bid, or which funds might take part, except to say it was Canadian-led and did not currently include “strategic investors” that are active in BlackBerry’s field of business.

Bernstein analyst Pierre Ferragu said he doubted financial sponsors would be comfortable with $ 3 billion of debt, given the only collateral BlackBerry could offer is its patent portfolio, which he valued between $ 800 million and $ 1.5 billion.

“We believe the Fairfax initiative is unlikely to come to fruition and see the next valuation floor for the stock at $ 5,” he wrote in a note to clients.

In the U.S. market AT&T Inc, No. 2 U.S. mobile operator said it is still selling BlackBerrys out of its stores and Verizon Wireless, the biggest U.S. mobile operator, says it will provide its customers with what they want. Sprint was not immediately available to comment.

BlackBerry’s woes will hurt suppliers. Contract electronic manufacturer Jabil Circuit, which counts BlackBerry as its second largest customer, said it is very likely it will part ways with the company, which could take between 28 and 34 cents out of its 2014 earnings per share.

T-Mobile executive calls potential Sprint merger the ‘logical ultimate combination’ - ( PH1L1PN33 )

T-Mobile and Sprint have long been the bridesmaids to AT&T and Verizon’s bride in the US, as both carriers have struggled to take significant market share away from the top two players. In light of that, there has been speculation and rumors surrounding a combination of Sprint and T-Mobile to create a large enough number three carrier to challenge AT&T and Verizon. Speaking to Reuters this week, T-Mobile chief financial officer Braxton Carter hinted that a merger between the two might not be that bad of an idea.

Though Carter did not say whether or not discussions between Sprint and T-Mobile have already happened, he referred to a potential merger as “the logical ultimate combination.” Carter then addressed an audience of investors and said “We think it’s not a question of if but when that there’s further consolidation in our industry.” He did note that regulatory concerns would make a merger between the two carriers difficult. When AT&T tried to purchase T-Mobile in 2011, it was blocked by the government, which decided that the market needed four major national carriers to remain competitive.

“We think it’s not a question of if but when that there’s further consolidation in our industry.”

In the past, T-Mobile has said that four major carriers in the US is not sustainable, and it’s very likely that there will only be three major carriers sometime in the future. Carter called Verizon and AT&T’s control of the market a “duopoly,” since between them, they have the lion’s share of mobile subscribers in the US. A strong third carrier would “create a more competitive environment,” he said.

Though it hasn’t partnered with Sprint just yet, T-Mobile has worked to expand its share of the market. Earlier this year, it closed an acquisition of MetroPCS, one of the largest regional carriers in the country, and it has introduced new rate plans that are designed to attract customers away from AT&T and Verizon. Sprint has been tied up with Japan’s Softbank, which agreed to take ownership of the company for $ 22 billion earlier this year.

Amazon unveils new tablets with live video helpdesk - ( PH1L1PN33 )

SEATTLE (Reuters) – Amazon.com Inc unveiled two new high-definition tablets on Tuesday with a unique on-screen helpdesk feature it hopes will give it an advantage over devices from rivals Apple Inc and Google Inc.

The new Kindle Fire HDX tablets feature what Amazon has called the ‘Mayday Button’, which instantly brings up a video chat with a tech-support representative who can tell a user how to operate the device or even do it for them remotely.

Amazon said the service is free for HDX customers, is available at all times, and is aiming for a 15-second maximum response time. Users can move the video box around the screen as it suits them and they cannot be seen by the Amazon representative.

The world’s largest Internet retailer takes a different approach to the tablet market than Apple, selling its Kindle devices at close to cost then profiting off the sale of digital content such as video and music, or physical goods like books from its website. Since Amazon took the plunge into the then-nascent tablet market with the Kindle Fire in 2011, the devices have proven to be effective vending machines for purchases.

It is unclear how the up-close-and-personal support feature will affect the underlying cost of supporting the Kindle.

“This is the kind of feature that we are well-suited to do,” said Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos, showing off the new tablets to reporters at Amazon’s Seattle headquarters on Tuesday. “Many of the things we’ve done marry together high-tech with heavy lifting. This is one of those things.”

Amazon would not say how many support staff were behind the Mayday service, but Bezos said the company was training “thousands” and was prepared to hire more people if needed.

“We’ll be ready for Christmas morning, which is always a very big tech support day for us,” said Bezos.

The new tablets, one with a 7-inch (18cm) screen and one with an 8.9-inch screen, are lighter and more powerful than the last Kindle HD line and appear to be aimed at Apple’s market-leading iPad. Amazon’s new HDX tablets come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage sizes.

The smaller Kindle Fire HDX tablet starts at $ 229 and the bigger tablet starts at $ 379, both for 16GB wifi-only models. By comparison, Apple’s 16GB wifi iPad mini starts at $ 329, and its 16GB full-sized wifi iPad starts at $ 499. To see comparative prices, click on

Amazon is taking pre-orders immediately for wifi-only models, with shipping scheduled for October for the 7-inch tablet and November for the 8.9-inch tablet. Wireless 4G versions of both will also be available, for $ 100 extra, later this year.

In addition, Amazon is selling an updated version of its Kindle Fire HD for $ 139, down from $ 199 for the last generation.

Together, Amazon is hoping the new offerings will give it a bigger share of the exploding tablet market, currently led by Apple’s iPad, followed by Samsung’s Galaxy range of tablets running Google’s Android system.

To promote profitable cross-selling, Amazon has extended its popular ‘X-Ray’ feature, which now allows users to buy music featured in TV shows and films at the touch of a button.

The new tablets run on the latest version of Amazon’s Fire OS, codenamed ‘Mojito’, which is its own operating system based on Google’s Android.

Twitter leaning toward NYSE for IPO: source - ( PH1L1PN33 )

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Social media network Twitter is leaning toward picking the New York Stock Exchange over Nasdaq for its highly-anticipated initial public offering, a person familiar with the matter said.

A report earlier on Tuesday by The Street said Twitter had already chosen the NYSE, but sources close to the exchanges told Reuters that Twitter has not made its decision yet.

Big Board parent NYSE Euronext, Nasdaq OMX Group and Twitter had no comment.

The competition for what is the most coveted technology listing since Facebook Inc, which chose Nasdaq for its market debut in May last year, is fierce, one of the sources said.

Technical glitches and questionable decisions at Nasdaq during the Facebook market debut led to losses by market makers and Nasdaq paid $ 10 million to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to settle charges related to the errors. It also voluntarily set up a $ 62 million fund to compensate firms harmed by the problems. The issues during the Facebook IPO have played into Twitter’s thinking, according to The Street.

Twitter, which is expected to be valued at up to $ 15 billion, filed with regulators on September 12 to go public, but did so confidentially under a process available to emerging growth companies and did not give a timeline.

Traditionally, Nasdaq had a lock on technology company listings, and NYSE on blue-chip stocks, but both have made inroads into each others’ respective territories in recent years.

During the lead-up to Facebook’s IPO, the chief executives from both Nasdaq and NYSE were reported to have flown to California to woo the management of the social network.

NYSE CEO Duncan Niederauer is currently in San Diego for a summit being held by Oracle Corp, which moved its listing to NYSE from Nasdaq in July in the largest ever U.S. market transfer. Last year, Kraft Foods moved to Nasdaq from the NYSE in what was, until Oracle’s announcement, the biggest company to ever switch exchanges.

End of an era as BlackBerry looks to go private - ( PH1L1PN33 )

TORONTO (Reuters) – Embattled smartphone company BlackBerry Ltd plans to go private in a $ 4.7 billion deal being orchestrated by its largest shareholder. Here are important milestones in the history of the company formerly known as Research In Motion:

February 1985 – Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin co-found Research In Motion in Waterloo, Ontario, the Canadian university city where Lazaridis studied.

1989 – RIM develops a network gateway called RIMGate, precursor to its BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

1992 – Jim Balsillie joins RIM as co-CEO, mortgaging his house and investing $ 250,000.

1994 – RIM launches a handheld point-of-sale card reader, which verifies debit and credit transactions directly to a bank.

1995 – RIM builds its own radio modem for wireless email.

1997 – RIM lists on the Toronto Stock Exchange, raising more than $ 115 million.

1999 – RIM launches BlackBerry email service, first wireless device to synch with corporate email systems. Lists on Nasdaq.

2002 – RIM adds voice calls to the BlackBerry.

2004 – RIM’s surpasses 1 million BlackBerry users.

2007 – Apple launches first iPhone. RIM passes 10 million subscribers, briefly becomes most valuable company in Canada. Google’s open source Android platform is unveiled. It launches in October 2008.

2008 – RIM launches BlackBerry Storm, its first touchscreen and keyboard-less device. The screen uses a tactile feedback technology known as haptics, allowing a user to click down to select actions. The model bombs.

2010 – RIM buys QNX Software Systems for C$ 200 million. It will later use its software for its BlackBerry 10 devices.

2011 – RIM launches PlayBook, which is panned for lacking core BlackBerry functions such as email and organizer functions. It later books a writedown on unsold PlayBook inventory. Company slashes financial forecasts, the first of many revisions, which it then misses. Says will slash more than 10 percent of its workforce. Resists investor pressure for co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie to step down. Offers to manage rival devices including Apple’s iPhone and iPad. Delays its QNX-based BlackBerry 10 phones until late 2012.

2012 – Lazaridis and Balsillie step down as co-chief executives and chairmen. Thorsten Heins appointed CEO and Barbara Stymiest named chair of the board. Heins promises overhaul, says RIM will no longer issue financial forecasts. RIM hires bankers to assist with strategic review, delays BlackBerry 10 again, until early 2013. Shares hit lowest level in nearly a decade.

Jan 30, 2013 – Heins unveils first BlackBerry 10 devices at glitzy event in New York, with simultaneous gatherings in other cities around the world, and company changes name to BlackBerry.

June 28, 2013 – Shares fall 25 percent after company reports loss and warns of more pain, says BlackBerry 10 sales were disappointing. Days earlier the company said it can now service Apple and Android devices for enterprise customers.

Aug 12, 2013 – BlackBerry says it is weighing options including a sale. Fairfax’s Prem Watsa steps down from board to avoid conflict of interest, days after Reuters reported that the company’s board was warming to the idea of going private.

Sept 3, 2013 – Microsoft buys Nokia’s phone business and licenses its patents for more than $ 7 billion.

Sept 20, 2013 – BlackBerry warns of a steep loss and says it will cut more than a third of its workforce as it abandons consumers.

Sept 23, 2013 – BlackBerry signs tentative $ 4.7 billion deal to be acquired and taken private by a consortium led by its largest investor, Prem Watsa’s Fairfax Financial.

China to relax web censorship in the name of economic growth - ( PH1L1PN33 )

China’s recent history has been marked by two key features: rampant economic growth and tight governmental control on the spread of information. Now, it seems, both are starting to wane, as economic expansion is slowing down and even the government’s zealous grip on the internet is beginning to loosen. A report from the South China Morning Post today cites sources within the Chinese government who say that the country’s ban on a number of globally popular social and news services will be lifted within the special Shanghai free trade zone.

Twitter, Facebook and The New York Times are explicitly named as websites that will be accessible within the area, but the phrasing of the report suggests there’ll be other politically sensitive online sources that also see their ban lifted.

The goal, as one of the insiders points out, is to make foreign visitors to the country feel more at home — which in turn is hoped to stimulate more trade and investment from overseas. A month ago, the Morning Post also reported anecdotal evidence of Twitter and Facebook being accessible in high-end hotels across China, with the ostensible reason again being to accommodate the expectations of foreign businessmen. China initially blocked access to Facebook back in 2009 in the wake of ethnic violence in its northwestern city of Urumqi, with the goal being either to suppress unfavorable information, prevent further clashes, or a mix of both. The country’s apparent willingness to make exceptions for foreign travellers looks to be an attempt to balance that tight grip on internal communications with the need to attract outsider interest.

Apple refunding iTunes purchases for ‘Breaking Bad: The Final Season’ - ( PH1L1PN33 )

Breaking Bad fans have seen things get pretty dire as the show has moved towards its closing moments, but those that watch the program on iTunes have something to smile out. Apple is sending out emails to users that paid for both halves of the show’s final season, refunding their second purchase.

Breaking Bad‘s fifth and final season was split into two eight-episode halves, each airing a year apart. However, when those episodes were sold through online services like Amazon and iTunes they were made available separately, under the names “Season 5″ and “The Final Season.” Because of the change, users that had purchased season-long bundles for the first eight had to pay a second time for the final set of episodes. Considering AMC had marketed the show as one, drawn-out season, there was reason to expect that an iTunes Season Pass, for example, should cover all eight; one fan was so outraged that he actually filed a lawsuit against Apple earlier this month.

In an email going out to customers today, Apple provides a redemption code in the amount of $ 22.99, while also stating that it was not responsible for choosing the season names nor the episodes contained within. (It’s important to note that the initial run of eight have already been made available on DVD and Blu-Ray under the name Breaking Bad: The Fifth Season.) It’s not clear whether Apple is doing the right thing on its own or whether AMC is behind the refund, but the news will certainly be welcome for fans of the Emmy-winning series. Another double-dip may be just on horizon, however: the final season of Mad Men will also be split up, with the first set of episodes released under the name “The Beginning,” and the final set under the moniker “The End of an Era.” We’re including Apple’s email below.

Dear Customer,

We apologize for any confusion the naming of “Season 5″ and “The Final Season” of Breaking Bad might have caused you. While the names of the seasons and episodes associated with them were not chosen by iTunes, we’d like to offer you “The Final Season” on us by providing you with the iTunes code below in the amount of $ 22.99. This credit can also be used for any other content on the iTunes Store. Thank you for your purchase.

Detailed instructions for redeeming the code can be found at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1574.

Larry Ellison juggles America’s Cup and Oracle customer expo - ( PH1L1PN33 )

By Noel Randewich

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – The 34th America’s Cup underway on San Francisco Bay is going on longer than Oracle Team USA backer Larry Ellison expected and is now overlapping with his software company’s massive annual customer conference.

America’s Cup sailing is a major passion for Ellison, rivaled only by his focus on expanding what is already the world’s third largest software maker.

The next match-ups for Ellison’s team in the America’s Cup, which could easily be the final ones in the regatta, are set for Tuesday at roughly the same time he is scheduled to give a major keynote at Oracle OpenWorld, which kicked off on Sunday at San Francisco’s main convention center.

Oracle Team USA won its fifth straight race on Monday, denying Emirates Team New Zealand the final victory it needs in order to claim the Cup, which organizers originally thought would be settled by last Saturday at the latest.

With over 60,000 people registered, this year’s OpenWorld conference is a major opportunity for the Ellison to pitch Oracle’s strategy on cloud computing and other technology designed for companies and governments.

Ellison’s main keynote is always a focal point of the event, an opportunity he often uses to attack rival companies and colorfully criticize their products to the delight of attendees.

A spokeswoman declined to say whether Oracle will reschedule Ellison’s Tuesday speech.

On Sunday, hours before opening Oracle OpenWorld with a speech in which he debuted new high-end data center technology, Ellison was out on the Bay as his team beat Emirates Team New Zealand in two races.

Ellison also met with a few of the Oracle crew members on Sunday evening, according to Oracle skipper Jimmy Spithill.

“He’s really excited, obviously. I bet he wishes he was out on the boat racing because he’s just a natural competitor,” Spithill told reporters. “On the other side, he’s obviously a very busy man running a business.”

Last week, Ellison was absent from Oracle’s quarterly earnings conference call with analysts so that he could be close to the racing, which the sailing enthusiast has been viewing from a team speedboat.

OpenWorld attendees are likely to be forgiving if Ellison reschedules his Tuesday speech.

“As long as customers can hear from Larry and he can talk through his vision at Oracle OpenWorld, that’s the focal point,” said FBR Capital Markets analyst Daniel Ives. “It’s what comes out of his mouth rather than the timing of when it comes out.”

Oracle’s sponsorship of the America’s Cup team gives the company a major marketing opportunity it regularly leverages at OpenWorld.

Oracle President Mark Hurd kicked off his keynote on Monday with an action-packed video of Oracle Team USA racing their high-tech AC72 catamaran, with captions including “Extreme Performance” and “Powered by Oracle.” He also led attendees, many of them IT employees at Fortune 500 companies, in a cheer to support the team.

Reporters who have been in San Francisco covering the America’s Cup for the past few weeks had trouble on Sunday and Monday extending their hotel stays because rooms have been sold out to tens of thousands of Oracle OpenWorld visitors.

Oracle Team USA won the America’s Cup in Valencia, Spain in 2010 and with it the right to set the rules for this year’s competition, including choosing to hold the regatta on San Francisco Bay.

BlackBerry savior Watsa, an investor with a long view - ( PH1L1PN33 )

By Andrea Hopkins and Cameron French

TORONTO (Reuters) – As soon as Prem Watsa stepped down from Blackberry’s board in August, speculation that he would launch a bid for the troubled smartphone maker started to swirl. Six weeks later, the man some call Canada’s Warren Buffett has delivered, beginning a rescue project he once said could take four or five years.

Just over a year ago, Watsa said BlackBerry was a “Canadian success story,” a good buy and a likely turnaround story even though its market share was tumbling.

BlackBerry’s fortunes have only deteriorated since then, with the latest blow coming on Friday, when Blackberry said it would cut more than a third of its workforce as it retreats from the consumer market in favor of its traditional strength serving businesses and governments.

But Watsa, chief executive of Fairfax Financial Holding Ltd, which is the top BlackBerry shareholder, is an old hand at looking wrong today and right tomorrow.

On Monday, BlackBerry said it agreed to be acquired by a consortium led by Fairfax for $ 4.7 billion, a move observers said could allow the company to put its house back in order out of the public eye.

Fairfax, both an insurance holding company and Watsa’s investment vehicle, was on the losing end of bets against the market in the mid 2000s as Watsa waited for the U.S. mortgage industry to collapse.

The company’s stock fell by 50 percent between mid-2003 and mid-2006 as Watsa’s purchases of credit default swaps flattened profits, while rivals feasted on a housing-fed bull market.

But when the market began to weaken in 2007, Fairfax began notching up investment gains, pulling in billion-dollar profits in 2007 and 2008. Then with markets still reeling and other investors licking their wounds, Watsa started to plow money back into equities, bringing another strong year in 2009.

Since their 2006 low of C$ 100, Fairfax’s shares have more than quadrupled.

Indeed, Watsa had already shown his investment chops by selling stock ahead of the 1987 stock market crash and buying Japanese puts – or rights to sell stocks at guaranteed prices – ahead of the Tokyo market’s collapse in 1990.

CANADA’S BUFFETT?

Like the billionaire Buffett, an investor Watsa says he admires, Watsa preaches a long view that suggests it may be too early to assess his decision to buy into BlackBerry.

As it sits now, BlackBerry has not been a turnaround story under Watsa’s watch. Since January 2012, a period when Fairfax has raised its stake in the company from a little more than 2 percent to just under 10 percent, BlackBerry’s share price has slumped.

“Prem invests for the long term,” Paul Holden, an analyst at CIBC World Markets who follows Fairfax, said earlier this year. “He’s held his major stake now for what I would say is a fairly short period of time relative to his investment horizon, so I would say it’s probably too early to put any score on that investment.”

Watsa stepped down from the BlackBerry board of directors in August, citing a potential conflict of interest, as the company said it was exploring the sale of itself and other options.

LOW PROFILE

Watsa, born in 1950 in Hyderabad, India, and trained as a chemical engineer, has a public profile that has at times bordered on the reclusive since he took over Fairfax in 1985. For his first 15 years at the company, he barely spoke to a reporter, and he only started holding investor conference calls in 2001.

Fairfax has generally not been known as an activist investor, but Watsa has not shied away from a fight, launching a $ 6 billion lawsuit against a group of hedge funds in 2006, accusing them of conspiring to the drive the company’s shares down so they could be shorted.

A short position enables an investor to profit when a stock drops.

To be sure, not all Watsa’s moves have been golden. Fairfax had to write off most of its investment in Winnipeg-based media company Canwest in 2009 as the company filed for bankruptcy protection. It also wrote down a significant investment in publisher Torstar in 2008-09.

Speaking last year, Watsa suggested investors looking for a short-term rebound in BlackBerry might be disappointed.

“Is it going to turn around in three months, six months, nine months? No,” he told reporters. “But if you’re looking four, five years … We make investments over four or five years.”

Google launches ‘Constitute,’ a new tool for designing governments - ( PH1L1PN33 )

The process of drafting a constitution is usually long, intricate and politically fraught — but with 160 different active constitutions to draw from, it’s also uniquely amenable to data analysis. With that in mind, Google has partnered with the Comparative Constitutions Project to launch a new site called Constitute, devoted to comparing the world’s constitutions. It examines nearly 350 constitutional themes, organized into topics like the duties of a citizen and the role of the executive. The result is a comprehensive view of how countries structure their governments, and a powerful tool for any would-be founders. As one co-founder put it, “If want to see what African constitutions have to say about the rights of women after 1945, you can do that in just a few clicks.”

“Our aim is to arm drafters with a better tool for constitution design and writing,” Google said in a post accompanying the launch. That’s a niche audience, to put it mildly, but it’s also an important one. In 2013 so far, Zimbabwe has already voted on a new constitution, and 2012 saw both Somalia and Syria adopt new founding documents, along with nearly half a dozen revisions from other countries. The hope is that, if Constitute can influence the next generation of constitutions and give citizens a greater sense of ownership over the documents, it could have a huge impact in years to come.

Liftware spoon helps Parkinson’s sufferers control their tremor - ( PH1L1PN33 )

A new spoon claims to help those suffering from Parkinson’s disease to eat. Affecting the nervous system, Parkinson’s can cause limbs to tremor, making simple tasks like eating laborious. Liftware is an electronic spoon that uses a microchip and sensors to detect the direction and force of a user’s tremor, before motoring the spoon in the opposite direction to cancel out the movement as best it can.

The results aren’t perfect, and it’s only suitable for those with a 2-inch-or-less tremor, but it’s a massive improvement over using a regular spoon. The actual spoon part of the device detaches from the handle for washing, and the handle can be charged in a dock. It’s said the battery will last for “several mealtimes.”

Lift labs, the company behind the product, infers its product is better than current eating aids like braces, which lock joints in place to force users’ hands to be still. It says its product allows the patient’s hand to shake, avoiding the discomfort sometimes caused by braces.

Liftware560

Liftware’s makers plan to offer different attachments

For now at least, Liftware is just an eating device, but its makers plan to offer additional attachments that can be fitted to the handle in place of a spoon. A fork, a soup spoon, and, perhaps most interestingly, a keyholder are all listed as “coming soon” on the company’s website. You can pre-order Liftware directly from Lift labs for $ 295, which although expensive seems a small price to pay for the convenience it offers. Delivery is currently slated for mid-December, and the company says it won’t charge until orders ship.

Snowden disclosures prompt warning on widely used computer security formula - ( PH1L1PN33 )

By Joseph Menn

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – In the latest fallout from Edward Snowden’s intelligence disclosures, a major U.S. computer security company warned thousands of customers on Thursday to stop using software that relies on a weak mathematical formula developed by the National Security Agency.

RSA, the security arm of storage company EMC Corp, told current customers in an email that a toolkit for developers had a default random-number generator using the weak formula, and that customers should switch to one of several other formulas in the product.

Last week, the New York Times reported that Snowden’s cache of documents from his time working for an NSA contractor showed that the agency used its public participation in the process for setting voluntary cryptography standards, run by the government’s National Institute of Standards and Technology, to push for a formula that it knew it could break.

NIST, which accepted the NSA proposal in 2006 as one of four systems acceptable for government use, this week said it would reconsider that inclusion in the wake of questions about its security.

But RSA’s warning underscores how the slow-moving standards process and industry practices could leave many users exposed to hacking by the NSA or others who could exploit the same flaw for years to come.

RSA had no immediate comment. It was unclear how the company could reach all the former customers of its development tools, let alone how those programmers could in turn reach all of their customers.

Developers who used RSA’s “BSAFE” kit wrote code for Web browsers, other software, and hardware components to increase their security. Random numbers are a core part of much modern cryptography, and the ability to guess what they are renders those formulas vulnerable.

The NSA-promoted formula was odd enough that some experts speculated for years that it was flawed by design. A person familiar with the process told Reuters that NIST accepted it in part because many government agencies were already using it.

But after the Times report, NIST said it was inviting public comments as it re-evaluated the formula.

“If vulnerabilities are found in these or any other NIST standards, we will work with the cryptographic community to address them as quickly as possible,” NIST said on September 10.

Snowden, who is wanted on U.S. espionage charges and is living in temporary asylum in Russia, disclosed secret NSA programs involving the collection of telephone and email data.

WeChat users in China get their own vending machines - ( PH1L1PN33 )

WeChat users in China can now quench their thirst in-between chatting online with their buddies using new WeChat vending machines.

During a month-long experiment, 300 of these WeChat vending machines (pictured) are popping up in subway stations in parts of Beijing. They allow WeChat users to pay for the bottled drinks entirely within the chat app, making use of the mobile payments integration that popped up in WeChat’s major update last month.

There’s a special discount available to WeChat users who pay online for the vending machines’ drinks – they get two cheap drinks wherein a soda bottle costs only RMB 1 ($ 0.16). The usual price in the capital can be anywhere from RMB 3 to 5 ($ 0.50 to $ 0.80). Of course, anyone can use the machines in the normal way with cash, but there won’t be any discounts.

WeChat users in China get their own vending machines

The company behind the project is Ubox, which we also saw testing out mobile payments for vending machines way back in 2011. Ubox has the nod from Tencent (0700.HK), makers of WeChat, for its latest endeavour. But even though this fresh attempt is boosted by WeChat and its 236 million active users, it’ll prove hard to persuade customers to give mobile payments a shot.

Quesne claims Italian Open for second career title - ( PH1L1PN33 )

France’s Julien Quesne clinched his second European Tour title Sunday when he won the Italian Open by one shot despite starting the final round four shots off the pace.

The 33-year-old went through the back nine in 31, picking up birdies at the 10th, 11th and 15th holes.

He then chipped in from short of the 17th green and putted from six feet for another birdie on the last to complete a closing 67.

That gave him a 12-under-par total and a one-shot win over Ireland’s David Higgins and England’s Steve Webster.

“I am very proud of this back nine. My attitude was very good this week and I think this is the key,” said Quesne, whose previous title came at the Andalucia Open in 2012.

“To enjoy a second win on the European Tour is like a dream for me.

“I am surprised to be here. The flags were very difficult all week so it was very difficult to make birdies and easy to make some bogeys.”

Overnight leader Marcus Fraser of Australia three-putted the 15th and dropped another shot on the par-three 16th.

Fraser eventually signed for a 74 to finish joint eighth on nine under.

Home hope Francesco Molinari, who joined the Turin club when he was just eight, came home in 39 to finish seven under.

Infineon sees 2013 profit beating target by a fifth: report - ( PH1L1PN33 )

BERLIN (Reuters) – German chipmaker Infineon expects to beat its profit target by about a fifth this financial year as demand from industrial customers is improving, Boersen-Zeitung reported, citing company finance chief Dominik Asam.

“We will most likely earn about 20 percent more profit than previously planned in the 2013 fiscal year (ending September 30),” the newspaper quoted Asam as saying in an interview published on Sunday.

“After two years of stagnation, a recovery is on the horizon for the global semiconductor industry,” the CFO told the newspaper.

Asam did not provide a profit figure, nor say what the company had been expecting. A spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

Still, the company, whose chips activate airbags, enable cruise control in cars and cut emissions, may not reach a goal of 5 billion euros ($ 6.8 billion) of sales until 2016, a year later than originally planned, Asam said, citing the effects of the European debt crisis.

Infineon may reach its long-term goal of a 15-percent operating profit margin in three years time, the CFO added.

Stenson keeps four-shot lead at Tour Championship - ( PH1L1PN33 )

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson fired a one-under par 69 on Saturday to keep a four-stroke lead after the third round of the season-ending $ 8 million US PGA Tour Championship.

If Stenson can keep his lead over the final 18 holes at East Lake on Sunday, he will claim the $ 10 million bonus for winning the tour’s playoff title, the FedEx Cup, as well as the tournament’s $ 1.44 million top prize.

But with a chance to stretch his lead over the rest of the 30-man field on a rainy day, Stenson stumbled at the finish, making bogeys on three of the final five holes, including a four-foot par putt miss at the 18th, that left him on 11-under 199 after 54 holes.

American Dustin Johnson was second on 203 after a third-round 67 with US veteran Steve Stricker third on 205 after shooting 68.

England’s Justin Rose, the reigning US Open champion, shared fourth on 206 with Americans Zach Johnson, Billy Horschel and Jordan Spieth. England’s Luke Donald and American Nick Watney were another stroke adrift.

Stenson and Zach Johnson were the only two of five players in the title fight who can win the playoff title by winning the tournament.

World number one Tiger Woods, the playoff points leader, fired a 69 to stay 26th on 213, one stroke behind US compatriot Matt Kuchar, who was also in the top five in points.

“I didn’t hit it very good today,” Woods said. “I hit everything to the right or I flipped it left, but I putted better.

“The goal is to go out and shoot a good round tomorrow and see where the chips fall.”

Australian Adam Scott, the reigning Masters champion, stumbled to a 74 to stand on 210 after starting the day with fever and chills and receiving IV fluids to treat his flu symptoms.

Stenson birdied the second and third holes and added two more at the seventh and ninth holes, stretching his edge over the field at one stage to nine strokes.

But the Swede began the back nine with a bogey, added another at 14 and followed a birdie at the par-5 15th with bogeys at 16 and 18.

Siemens chairman to quit Axel Springer board: magazine - ( PH1L1PN33 )

BERLIN (Reuters) – Siemens supervisory board chairman Gerhard Cromme will quit the board of publisher Axel Springer to focus on his role at Germany’s biggest engineering company, WirtschaftsWoche magazine reported on Saturday.

Cromme plans to leave his role as a member of Axel Springer’s supervisory board on April 16, 2014 when the company holds its annual general meeting, the weekly business news magazine said, without citing a source.

A spokeswoman for the German publisher confirmed that the entire board would be up for election that day, but said she had no knowledge that Cromme was planning to leave.

Siemens went through a turbulent leadership change in July when former CEO Peter Loescher, hired by Cromme, quit after the company had issued its second profit warning this year. Loescher was succeeded by finance chief Joe Kaeser.

China’s Huawei to add 5,500 jobs in Europe in five years: paper - ( PH1L1PN33 )

BEIJING (Reuters) – Chinese telecommunications equipment maker Huawei plans to create 5,500 jobs in Europe within five years as the company expands its services in the region, state-owned newspaper China Daily said on Saturday.

Huawei, the world’s second largest maker of telecoms communication equipment, is to offer information technology solutions to European businesses, Patrick Zhang, president of marketing and solutions at Huawei Enterprise Business Group, told the newspaper.

This business is expected to generate turnover of $ 1 billion in the next three to five years, he added.

The company is launching its expansion despite the European Commission’s allegations of anti-competitive behavior by Huawei and Chinese peer ZTE.

Zhang said Europe offered more growth potential than the United States, where a congressional report last year found the company posed a security threat and essentially blocked it from the market.

“Our expansion progress in Europe is different from that in the U.S., where we have encountered access difficulties due to some groundless reasons given by the American side,” Zhang said.

Huawei representatives said last week that the company expected to have its revenues expand by 10 percent annually over the next five years, thanks largely to consumer devices and enterprise services.

Huawei reported revenues of $ 35 billion in 2012.
